How to Find Someone Online

The Definitive Guide to Finding Someone Online

By Wendy Boswell, About.com

Need to find someone online? With all the new Web sites available to help you find someone online, people are finding surprising tidbits of information about their co-workers, loved ones, and friends that often don't turn up in a simple Web search. None of the following sites will give you information that isn't publicly available, but they will give it to you all in one place.

11. Find a Zip Code

You can use the Web for an easy zip code look up. Here's a few sites that have zip code look ups and more.

12. Top Ten Free Public Records Search Picks

Looking to do a free public records search on the Web? I've put together a Top Ten list of where to find the best free public record search databases online, from obituaries to census records. Note: Depending on the state or country that you live in, you might not be able to access more personal public records, such as birth certificates, drivers' licenses, marriage certificates, etc., without A)showing physical proof of identification or B)paying a fee.

13. Track Your Friends with Spokeo

Spokeo is a way to track your friends across 22 different social networks so you don't have to visit each one individually. All you do is enter your webmail address, and Spokeo imports your email relationships (securely; they don't save the info) to find out what your friends and family might be up to. For example, I was able to see updated social activity of over one hundred of my friends and family using Spokeo....all in one, convenient, easily accessible place. Very cool.

14. USA.gov

USA.gov, formerly known as FirstGov.gov, is an absolutely mammoth search engine/portal that gives the searcher direct access to searchable information from the United States government, state governments, and local governments.

15. Use MySpace to Find High School Classmates

Did you know that you can use MySpace for free to find high school classmates? Find out more.

16. Find a Grave

Did you know that you can find a grave online? You can also view many cemeteries on the Web. Here's a roundup of just a few of the sites that I found.

17. Image Search Engines

These image search engines, directories, and collections will help you to find whatever kind of image you're looking for on the Web; whether it's a piece of clipart, a photograph, a piece of art, or almost anything else you might be searching for. Here are just a few of the many specialized image search engines on the Web.

18. Find an Area Code

If you're trying to figure out what part of the country a U.S. area code is related to, all you need to do is type in the area code into most any search engine.

19. Find a Newspaper

Online newspapers are how I get my news these days - I don't have to subscribe, recycle, or pick up sheets of newsprint anymore! This makes monitoring news locally even easier; and you can also see what other local newspapers are saying as well (without getting out of your pajamas).

20. Local Search Sites

Some of the most interesting sites and search engines making their debuts today are those that are focused on local search, whehter that be local real estate, local weather, or local news.
